Helping Children (and Grown-Ups) Understand Emotional Energy with Worley’s World + Zones of Regulation

Ever felt like your child is bouncing off the walls one minute and flopped in a heap the next? Or they go from chilled to meltdown in the blink of an eye?
You’re not imagining it, and you’re definitely not alone. Children experience huge shifts in energy and emotion throughout the day. Their brains are still learning how to process, regulate, and respond. That’s where understanding the Zones of Regulation can be a total game-changer.
But here at Worley’s World, we do things a little differently. We don’t just talk about emotions; we bring them to life through storytelling, characters, play, and connection. Because let’s be honest… emotions don’t live in worksheets. They live in moments, in memories, and in monsters. Let’s dive in.
🧠 Understanding the 4 Energy Zones
The Zones of Regulation offer a simple, visual way to help children (and grown-ups!) recognize how they’re feeling. Think of it like a traffic light for the brain:
🔵 Blue Zone – Low Energy (“I feel tired or sad”)
This is when your child’s energy is running on empty. They might be quiet or sluggish. You may hear them say, “I don’t feel like it” or “Just leave me alone.” Sound familiar?
🛠️ Support tip: Offer a warm cuddle, a quiet corner, or some downtime with their favourite monster. Whether they’re feeling like Rocco or just need space, this is a chance to recharge—not something to be “fixed.”
💚 Green Zone – Happy & Focused (“I feel ready!”)
This is the sweet spot! Your child is alert, engaged, and ready to go. They might say, “Let’s play!” or “Watch this!”
🛠️ Support tip: Celebrate this moment. Say, “I love how focused and ready you are!” Let them enjoy the buzz of this balanced, feel-good energy—and soak it in with them.
💛 Yellow Zone – The Wiggly Phase (“I feel fidgety or nervous”)
Energy is creeping up! This can look like giggles, bouncing legs, fast talking, or restless hands. Sometimes it’s excitement; sometimes, it’s nerves… sometimes both!
🛠️ Support tip: This isn’t “naughty”—it’s a warning sign that their energy is building. Get ahead of it with a monster wiggle break, breathing games, or dancing like Jenn on a sugar high!
❤️ Red Zone – Overwhelmed (“I feel angry or scared”)
Boom. The feelings are too big to hold. Your child might shout, cry, run off, or totally shut down. This is the explode phase—and logic won’t work here.
🛠️ Support tip: Don’t match their energy. Instead, match their need for safety. Create a calm space, offer simple sensory tools, and speak gently. “I see you’re overwhelmed. I’m here with you.” Just like Larry, your child needs you, not a lecture.
🎯 What Makes Worley’s World Different
Let’s be real—there are loads of emotion charts and keyrings out there. (We love a good laminated visual.) But information alone doesn’t create transformation.
What makes Worley’s World different is how we help it stick:
🔥 1. We Tell Stories
When kids meet George (anger), Polly (anxiety), or Larry (fear), they don’t just learn a colour—they relate to it. They start to say things like “George’s fire is in my belly!” or “Polly’s butterflies are back.” That’s not just cute—that’s connection.
💬 2. We Give It Context
Knowing you’re in the red zone is great—but knowing what to do next is the real magic. Our monsters don’t just explain emotions; they model tools, steps, and new ways of thinking. We bring emotional learning to life so it makes sense when it matters most.
🧠 3. We Help Grown-Ups Too
Let’s be honest—most of us didn’t grow up learning this stuff. So, it’s no wonder we freeze when our kids explode! That’s why we support grown-ups alongside children. Whether it’s in a workshop, a drop-in, or a bedtime story—you’re learning too. And that’s powerful.
🤝 Co-Regulation: Borrowing Your Calm
Children learn to regulate through relationships. Before they can manage their emotions, they need to see how you do it.
This is co-regulation. It starts with how we show up in their big feelings. Instead of saying, “Calm down!” try:
🗣️ “Your feelings are big right now. Let’s breathe together.”
🗣️ “I’m right here. You’re not alone.”
Every time you stay with them through the storm, you’re writing a new emotional script—one they’ll one day use with themselves.
🐉 Worley: Your Emotional Sidekick
Whether your child is feeling tired like Rocco, excited like Jenn, or angry like George—Worley’s World provides them with a safe and playful way to understand what’s going on inside.
We use monsters, music, movement, mindfulness, and (most importantly) connection to turn emotional chaos into emotional confidence.
